The Center for Responsible Nanotechnology Scenario Project

CRN Task Force Scenario Project
For the year 2007, the major project of the CRN Task Force was to begin producing a series of professional-quality scenarios of a near-future world in which exponential general-purpose molecular manufacturing becomes a reality. The purpose is to offer plausible, logical, understandable "stories" that illustrate the challenge of contending with the implications of advanced nanotechnology. What will that future look like? What can we learn from picturing it now that might help us avoid the worst pitfalls and generate the greatest benefits?

Scenarios for 2025

Scenarios for 2025
These scenarios look forward to 2025. A team of around 130 people have contributed, plus numerous comments from readers. The papers follow chronological order, so you can jump to the outcome by scrolling down to the foot of the page. That said, the first text is a brief summary, and the very last link is to a PDF of the scenario presentation itself, plus recommendations for a workshop format. Many find this a good place to start, and prefer to use this as an index to guide them to specific papers of interest.

IBM Telco 2015 - United States

The telecommunications industry has experienced more change in the last decade than in its entire history. In 1999, only 15 percent of the world’s population had access to a telephone; by 2009, nearly 70 percent had mobile phone subscriptions. This decade has also brought steep declines in public switched telephone network (PSTN) voice revenues, an explosion of over-the-top (OTT) communication services, phenomenal growth in mobile communications, global industry consolidation and even ground-breaking telco decisions to outsource their networks.

THE DINOKENG SCENARIOS - THREE FUTURES FOR SOUTH AFRICA

In 1994, at the dawn of a democratic era in South Africa our hopes were writ large in the narrative of liberty. There was a vision both of nationhood for all, and of substantial improvement in the quality of life for the victims of apartheid. Even those who had been part of the previous oppressive minority were buoyed by a sense of new-found pride in a nation that could hold its head high in the global community.

UMK

The United Micro Kingdoms (UmK) is divided into four super-shires inhabited by Digitarians, Bioliberals, Anarcho-evolutionists and Communo-nuclearists. Each county is an experimental zone, free to develop its own form of governance, economy and lifestyle. These include neoliberalism and digital technology, social democracy and biotechnology, anarchy and self-experimentation and communism and nuclear energy. The UmK is a deregulated laboratory for competing social, ideological, technological and economic models.
